New World is considering introducing a small charge for plastic bags to help reduce their use, with any money raised going to environmental and community causes. But, we want to be sure it’s what New Zealanders want, so we’re inviting customers to vote.
There are three choices: 5 cents per bag charge to go to community and environmental causes, 10 cents per bag charge to go to community and environmental causes, or no introduction of a charge.
Anyone can post a vote online at www.bagvote.co.nz from midday Thursday 14 September through to midnight 8 October 2017. Whatever the result we’ll continue to work on reducing plastic bag use, providing more reusable bag options and increasing soft plastics recycling - reduce, reuse, recycle.
If the majority of our customers vote for a bag charge, a number of causes will benefit including the Starship Foundation, our Food for Thought education programme and SEA CLEANERS.
This environmental initiative is just one of many introduced by New World and Foodstuffs to reduce our impact on our land and waterways. To find out more about our existing plastic bag rebate available to North Island customers visit www.foodstuffs.co.nz/reducing-plastic-bag-usage. To read more about our other initiatives, click here.
